A Rundown on WHM’s “Convert Addon Domain to Account” Interface

The “Convert Addon Domain to Account”

interface, which is found in the “Transfers” section in WHM, makes it easy to split domains. It can be done easily by following the path that is mentioned below.

WHM -> Home -> Transfers -> Convert Addon Domain to Account.

This blog is meant to provide a run-through of the data and its details that can be migrated by the “Convert Addon Domain to Account” interface.

What is WHM?

Since the Convert Addon Domain to Account interface is found in WHM, it becomes imperative to touch upon WHM in brief. WHM stands for Web Host Manager. It is a control dashboard which aids a user in the management of multiple cPanel sites.

In the context of websites, it is important to know that every website that can be found on the Internet has its files on the servers of some web hosting company. These web hosting service providers not only lease server space for this purpose but also provide all the necessary services and technologies that ensure that a website is accessible at all times over the Internet. With a multitude of web hosting companies claiming to be the “Best Website Hosting Company” or the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or the “Top Cloud Hosting Company”, it becomes a necessity to do a thorough research before zeroing in on the perfect option for one’s hosting requirements.

Data Migration through Convert Addon Domain to Account

The following data can be migrated with the aid of the Convert Addon Domain to Account interface.

DNS Records

Website Configuration- Document root contents, VirtualHost include files and installed SSL certificate.

Email- Email accounts, email autoresponders, email user filters, email forwarders, domain forwarders, mailing lists, webmail and webmail application data.

MySQL- databases and database users.

Redirects

Subaccounts- FTP accounts and Web Disk accounts.

An important point that needs to be considered to ensure that the conversion process doesn’t fail is that one must delete the addon domain’s subdomains before the conversion takes place. A backup of the cPanel account needs to be performed, prior to deleting the subdomain. This ensures that the subdomain’s data gets saved. Once the conversion process is completed, the backup file can be restored to the account.

Details about the Migrated Data

This section aims to provide brief but comprehensive information with regard to the data that the Convert Addon Domain to Account tool migrates.

DNS Records- DNS records are migrated by the conversion process by copying the DNS zone file prior to the removal of the addon domain. Post the creation of the new account, the saved copy of the zone file is restored by the process. The IP address is updated to reflect the IP address of the new account.

Email Accounts- An email account’s data is copied in the conversion process from the original account. Once the conversion is done, the original account’s email account data continues to be present but any new email will be found only on the new account.

Email Autoresponders- The email autoresponder’s data that is in the original account is copied in the conversion process. Post the conversion, the data of the email autoresponder continues to exist on the original account.

Email Forwarders- The forwarder files are copied in the conversion process and are restored for the new account. Since the forwarder data that is outside the home directory of the cPanel user is tracked by the cPanel & WHM, only a single copy can be present on the system.

Email Mailing Lists- Email Mailing Lists are not impacted by the conversion process. Hence, the mailing lists that already exist, continue to function in an unchanged manner.

Webmail- The signature data, the address book, calendar and note are copied from the original account in the conversion process. Once the conversion is completed, the data that is in the original account continues to exist.

MySQL databases (copied) - In the event that MySQL databases are copied, the original databases remain unaffected by the conversion process.

MySQL databases (moved) - In this case, the users that have grants on the database get updated in the conversion process.

Subaccounts- Here, the FTP and the Web Disk accounts get copied from the original account in the conversion process and the original account’s data continues to exist post the completion of the conversion.

Website Configuration- The document root data, the VirtualHost include files, and the installed SSL certificate are all copied from the original account in the conversion process. Once again, the original account’s data continues to exist after the conversion has taken place.

Data Migration that isn’t possible through Convert Addon Domain to Account

Last but not the least, let us know about the data that can’t be migrated by the Convert Addon Domain to Account interface. These are mentioned in no particular order and include MultiPHP settings, installed applications, subaccounts and subdomains.
