The File and Directory Restoration interface of cPanel enables the restoration of items from local backup sources. Backups can be accessed by entering a path or by browsing through directories and files. It needs to be mentioned here that this feature will only appear if it has been enabled by the server profile of the hosting service provider. If this feature needs to be used, then the hosting service provider or the system administrator needs to enable account backups and other configurations in the Backup Configuration interface in WHM.
WHM >> Home >> Backup >> Backup Configuration
The File and Directory Restoration interface enables the restoration of items from only local backup files. You will need to transfer the desired remote backup files to the local server, if you need to restore items from remote backup files. An account’s .cpanel and mail directories cannot be restored through this interface. A full account backup restoration needs to be carried out to restore these directories. The system restores deleted files and overwrites existing files.
The information provided here with regard to the File and Directory Restoration interface is valid for versions 84 through the latest version. Prior to elaborating on the File and Directory Restoration interface, let us touch upon cPanel, as it is cPanel’s interface.
cPanel and the Service of Web Hosting
cPanel is a control panel that is browser-based. It is used by website owners to manage their sites. Running a website is rendered easy by cPanel as all the necessary tools are available in the control panel. CMS (Content Management System), such as WordPress, can be effortlessly installed from the cPanel dashboard. The cPanel dashboard enables the management of databases, backups, domain names, email, and much more. Website owners first need to avail the services of web hosting to ensure that their sites are accessible over the Internet. This service is provided by web hosting companies, which are also known as web hosts. Web hosting service providers, such as HTS Hosting, offer various types of hosting services through their hosting plans. These services can be shared hosting, dedicated hosting, reseller hosting, VPS hosting, WordPress hosting, and Cloud hosting. Outstanding hosting services are often referred to as the “Best Windows Shared Hosting” or as the “Best Linux Dedicated Hosting” or as “Top Cloud Hosting”, depending on the type of hosting service that is being offered.
The File and Directory Restoration Interface
Files and Directories and Backups are the two sections of the File and Directory Restoration interface. Those files and directories which contain backups are shown by the Files and Directories section. The Backups section consists of backups. There are two ways to access backups from this interface. One of these ways involves entering a direct path to the directory or the file. The other way involves browsing through directories and files in order to find the file that needs to be restored.
Let us find out more about each of these two ways.
Enter a Direct Path to Restore a File or Directory
A directory or a file can be restored via a direct path through the home directory of the cPanel account. In order to attain this, the following steps need to be carried out:
Select Enter a path in the Files and Directories section.
Enter the direct path to the directory or the file in the text box. The path to the text box is the home directory path of the cPanel account user.
Click Show Backups. This lists the backups for that directory or file. The backups appear in the interface’s Backups section.
Click Restore in the Backups section after choosing the backup that needs to be restored.
Click Restore to confirm, as at this stage the system will ask you to confirm the restoration.
After the completion of these steps, a success or failure message appears. It needs to be noted that you need to select Browse files and directories in order to view the contents of a directory. The contents of a directory won’t be shown by the system when Enter a path has been selected.
Browse Your Home Directory to Restore a File or Directory
It is possible to browse through the home directory and find the directory or file that needs to be restored. The below-mentioned steps need to be carried out for this purpose.
Select Browse files and directories in the Files and Directories section. Now, the contents of the home directory of the cPanel account user appear.
Click on the directory’s name to view the contents of a directory.
Click Show Backups. This lists the backups for a directory or file. These backups appear in the interface’s Backups section.
Click Restore in the Backups section after choosing the backup that needs to be restored.
Click Restore to confirm, as at this stage the system will ask you to confirm the restoration.
After the completion of these steps, a success or failure message appears. Those files and directories that have been successfully restored, appear in the home directory.
