If, as a new domain controller, you are wondering about setting up Active Directory on Windows 2016, then here is all the information that you need. Although the system will guide you through the steps involved in setting up the Active Directory, all the necessary information has been put together in this blog for your convenience.

Configuring AD DS (Domain Controller): Steps Involved in Setting up Active Directory

  • Click on the option, “Add roles and features”, that is in the Server Manager Dashboard

  • Select the option, “Role-based or feature-based installation” and press “Next”

  • The server needs to be selected by highlighting the row. Then press “Next”

  • Opt for “Active Directory Domain Services” and then press “Next”

  • Press “Add Features”

  • You need not select anything at this juncture, so press “Next”

  • Press “Next” in the AD DS section

  • Review everything on the Confirmation Window. Then Press “Install”

At this stage, the installation process begins. Once the installation has been completed, the server needs to be promoted to a domain controller.

  • Press “Promote this server to a domain controller”

  • If you press “Close”, then press the yellow-colored exclamation mark that is present in the upper-right part of the Server Management Dashboard

  • Select the option, “Add a new forest”, then type in the domain name, which you want to use, and then press “Next”

  • Now type in the specific password, which you want to use for DSRM, and press “Next”

  • Press “Next” on the “DNS Options” page

  • Press “Next” on the page for “Additional Options”

  • Press “Next” in the “Paths” section

  • Press “Next” on the screen that has “Review Options”

  • Press “Install” on the page for “Prerequisites Check”

The process of installation (promotion process) begins at this stage. The server reboots while this process is going on. Once the installation has taken place, you need to log in again. This time you will use the domain credentials to log into the server.

Now you should verify if the Active Directory has been indeed set up and if your server has classified as a DC (Domain Controller).

  • Press “Tools” from within the Server Manager and then press “Active Directory Users and Computers”

  • Expand the domain root and then press “Domain Controllers”

Your new server should be displayed to you at this stage. Enable RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) now.

  • Press “Local Server” in the Server Manager Dashboard

  • Press “Disabled” option that will be visible alongside “Remote Desktop”

  • Select the option “Allow remote connections to this computer”

  • Now you need to uncheck the option, “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication”, and then you need to press “OK”

Now you have successfully set up the Active Directory on Windows Server 2016.
