If you are looking for information on how to set up custom nameservers for VPS (Virtual Private Server) then you have arrived at the right place. The information contained here will guide you through the steps involved in this process. Prior to that let us touch upon what VPS and nameservers are.

VPS

VPS is the abbreviation for Virtual Private Server. It is a type of a server that is at the core of the service of web hosting, which uses it as a web server for providing the service of web hosting. In web hosting, server space is rented by web hosting companies to website owners, so that they can save their websites’ files on those servers. The delivery of these files over the Internet from the server to the users’ devices makes websites accessible. Web hosting companies provide all the necessary technologies for this purpose. The most reputable web hosting service providers are frequently referred to as the “Best Website Hosting Company” or as the “Best Windows Hosting Company” or as the “Best Cloud Hosting Company”, depending on the type of hosting service that they excel in.

Virtual Private Servers are provided by web hosting companies, and these offer cost-effective web hosting solutions for delivering enhanced speed, performance and security to the websites that are hosted on these servers. Since a VPS is a type of a server, it accepts and fulfils web content (HTML pages, images, videos, etc.) requests made via browsers and mobile applications of Internet users. These requests for web content are in the form of HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) messages.

A Virtual Private Server functions on virtualization technology. It has its individual OS’ (Operating System) copy. A VPS makes it possible to provide dedicated resources to the individual users of a shared server environment. For this purpose, a hypervisor is used. It enables each website hosted on a VPS to have access to an emulated server, known as a VM (Virtual Machine). These physical servers get segmented into multiple virtual compartments by a process known as server virtualization. Each of these compartments has server software set up on it. Hence, each unit functions as an independent unit, and is rented by the service provider of VPS.

Nameserver

A name server is the DNS’ (Domain Name System) server component. Its primary function involves connecting URLs with web servers’ IP addresses.

Process of Setting up Custom Nameservers for VPS

In order to set up custom nameservers for a Virtual Private Server you need to follow the below-mentioned steps sequentially.

  • Decide the nameservers that you want to use

  • Replace WHM (Web Host Manager) to use nameservers

  • Register your custom nameservers

  • Update your domains. This needs to be done so that you are able to use the new nameservers that have been set up.

Let us elaborate on each of these steps now.

Step 1- Decide the nameservers that you want to use

When you decide the nameservers which you want to use, ensure to use your domain. You need to have a minimum of two nameservers but you can have more if you wish to.

Step 2- Replace WHM to use nameservers

Post deciding the names to use in conjunction with the nameservers, WHM needs to be updated for using those nameservers for the server.

  • Log in to the WHM interface of your server.

If the initial WHM setup has not been completed, the nameservers can be configured at the appropriate step of the initial setup.

  • Choose BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) Nameserver Configuration.

  • Enter your nameservers in the respective boxes that are present on the same page.

  • Check the box Configure Address Records for Nameservers.

  • Enter those IPs that will be used for your nameservers in the respective IPv4 boxes.

If you are through with the initial setup, and you need to modify those nameservers that are being used by your server, then you should follow the below-mentioned steps.

  • Find on the left, the navigation section, “Basic WebHost Manager Setup”. It is under Server Configuration.

  • At the bottom of the page, there will be the “Nameservers” section.

  • Enter your nameservers here.

  • Configure the Address Records with the accurate IPs.

  • Click “Save Changes”.

The IP address will be the same as the one that you use for your VPS. The IP address can be found in the section, “Show IP Address Usage”.

Step 3- Register your custom nameservers

This shall be done at the registrar level with regard to the domain that is being used with the nameservers.

  • If the domain that you are using is registered with a hosting company, then you should contact that company and it should register the nameserver for you.

  • If the domain is not registered with a hosting company, you must contact your domain registrar. Alternatively, you can log in to your account with the registrar for registering your nameservers. If you seek the registrar’s help, let the registrar know that you need to set up Glue Records. You are required to provide the custom nameservers and the IP addresses.

Step 4- Update your domains

Now you need to update your domains for using the new nameservers that have been set up. Log in to the control panel of the domain, and update the nameservers, so that these point to the new set.
