Information about the Server Profile Interface

The Server Profile is an interface, which enables you to select the profile of a server, depending on the service that you want the server to provide. This proves to be beneficial when it comes to managing specific services in order to ensure a reduction in the resource load of a server. It also enables you to configure optional roles with regard to certain profiles.

Here it needs to be mentioned that when any user upgrades to version 76 of cPanel & WHM, his/her default server profile is set by the system to the Standard Node profile. The user cannot change his/her server profile selection, if his/her server has at least one user account. Moreover, some profile settings disable features in the WHM interface, and in the cPanel interface.

Before elaborating on the Server Profile interface, let us describe what a server is, in brief. A server is any software or hardware device that is meant for accepting and fulfilling client requests, made over a network. The term “clients” in this context refers to those devices which generate requests for the servers and receive servers’ responses. These clients can be programs or devices. Service (functionality) is provided by servers to their clients, through the client-server model. Servers can be of many types, such as application server, database server, file server, proxy server, mail server, print server, game server, web server, etc.

Let us take the example of a web server. It is used to store/host the files (web content) of websites. These files are subsequently delivered from the server, over the Internet, to the Internet connected devices of those users, who are looking for that particular web content. This is how web content is made available to everyone by web hosting service providers through the service of web hosting. Web servers are an integral part of this service. In web hosting, space is provided on web servers for hosting web content, and all the necessary technologies and services are also provided to ensure unhindered availability of web content over the Internet. Now, web hosting can be of many types, such as shared hosting, dedicated hosting, VPS hosting, WordPress hosting, etc. When terms such as the Top Cloud Hosting Company” or the “Best Windows Shared Hosting Company” are used for any hosting service provider, then it reflects the trust of people in its service and the high quality of service offered by such a company. It is essential to opt for a reliable, reputable, and professional web hosting company, such as HTS Hosting, when choosing web hosting services in order to experience seamless web hosting.

Now let us elaborate on the Server Profile interface.

The Server Profile Interface

The Server Profile interface can be used to select a profile, which you would like to configure for your server. A star (*) icon designates the current profile configuration of the server. You need to click the information icon next to the description of the profile in order to display the roles that the profile affects.

Server profiles were introduced in the version 76 of cPanel & WHM. The function of server profiles is to let you optimize servers for the purpose of performing specific tasks or functions. A set of roles is enabled and disabled by a server profile. Roles refer to a collection of one or multiple services. Roles are used by profiles for providing specific server functionality. These roles are meant for allowing or disallowing certain services, which are related to the task of the server. Let us understand this with the help of an example. A server that is running the Mail Node profile disables most of the services that are not related to mail functions. A Mail Node server then hosts accounts that don’t need applications, such as web hosting or database access.

Your server’s profile can be configured with the Server Profile interface of WHM. WHM >> Home >> Server Configuration >> Server Profile.

It needs to be specified here that certain profiles disable features available in the WHM interface and in the cPanel interface. It is not recommended to use experimental profiles on production environments.

Selection is possible from the following profile options:

  • Standard Node – It is the default system profile. A server which provides all the services, as well as access to all cPanel features. All the roles are enabled in it. There are no optional roles in it.

  • Database Node – A server that provides only services, and features of cPanel which allow the system to serve databases. Its enabled roles include MySQL/MariaDB, Local Mail, and Send Mail. Calendars and Contacts, DNS, File Storage, FTP, Receive Mail, Spam Filter, Web Disk, Webmail, and Web Server are the disabled roles. PostgreSQL is the optional role.

  • DNS Node – A server that provides only services, and features of cPanel which allow the system to serve DNS (Domain Name System) zones. DNS, Local Mail, and Send Mail are its enabled roles. Its disabled roles include Calendars and Contacts, File Storage, FTP, PostgreSQL, Receive Mail, Spam Filter, Web Disk, Webmail, and Web Server. MySQL/MariaDB is the optional role in it.

  • Mail Node – A server that provides only services, and features of cPanel which allow the system to serve mail. Its enabled roles are Calendars and Contacts, Local Mail, Receive Mail, Send Mail, and Webmail. File Storage, FTP, MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Web Disk, and Web Server are its disabled roles. Its optional roles include DNS, and Spam Filter.

You need to select a server profile, and subsequently click Continue. Then the Select Options interface appears.

Select Options

This interface is available only for the Database Node, the DNS Node, and the Mail Node profiles. If you choose a profile with optional roles, you can return to this interface for the purpose of enabling or disabling these optional roles at any time.

You need to set the toggle in order to enable or disable the optional roles, which you want for the profile of your server. Then you need to click Continue.

Next, the Review Changes interface appears.

Review Changes

The interface, Review Changes, displays the enabled, disabled, and unaffected roles of the current profile selection.

It needs to be mentioned here that if you select a profile that is currently installed on the system, then you won’t be able to proceed. You have to select a different profile from the step, Select Options, in order to proceed.

You need to review the changes. Then you have to click Set Profile in order to proceed with the selected profile’s activation.

Activating Profile

The interface, Activating Profile, is meant for activating the selected profile. You need to click Show Details, so that the activation log can be displayed in real time. You can use the system directory link that is provided in the interface to view the log.

It needs to be mentioned here that the process of profile activation does not terminate if the browser window gets closed.

You get notified by the system once the profile activation process is completed. You have to click Go Back to return to the interface, Select Profile.

Now you have all the necessary information about the Server Profile interface.
